Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter hits and we start getting calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, most of them can be traced back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's smart to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself a bit of time to look through and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be spent on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system may be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies might notice increased symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
